3,000 invading American soldiers took over the Gage House and property in 1813 during the War of 1812.
At night, 700 British and Canadian soldiers and farmers surprised and defeated the Americans, captured the leaders, and the surviving American soldiers retreated back. This is considered the pivotal battle in turning the tides of war in the Canadian favour.
This monument was built in 1913 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of this battle.
This photo was taken in winter, thus note the old type of snow fence used in 1970 to prevent snow drifting.
