Kingfishers at Jericho Pond
by dwboyd
There was a lot of kingfisher activity at Jericho Pond on the afternoon of July 9, 2009. First I spotted a single kingfisher flying into a willow tree on the edge of the pond. I waited for about 20 minutes until it finally dived into the pond and came up unsuccessful and perched in another willow. It was soon joined by a 2nd kingfisher and they sat in the tree apparently discussing fishing technique. Finally a third kingfisher dived into the pond from the other side and came up with a fish. This seemed to cause a lot of excitement as the successful fisherman described his catch. Finally one of them flew to a tree near me where I was able to capture a few backlit closeups. Then they all departed for another distant part of the pond.
