Common Merganser Female in Winter Plumage

Although Hooded Mergansers are plentiful in False Creek in the winter it is not common to see Common Mergansers there. On February 2nd, this female swam into Alder Bay at the southeast corner of Granville Island. It was one of a few sunny days in February and there were lots of birds in the water.
