EXPLORE 10th December, 2009 #403

Detail, macro shot of the Australian Native plant, Anigozanthos, otherwise known as Kangaroo Paw. This particular plant grows in my front garden, along with a few other varieties, which flower in different colours/shades. These flowers are borne on long stems with anywhere up to 20 flower heads upon them. They grow as buds on the stems, then as they age, they split open, revealing 6 petals, from which their delicate stamen protrude. The flowers and stems have a felt-like feel to them, and arise from clumps of strap-like leaves. They make excellent cut flowers. both fresh and dried.

Along with some of the Banksias and Waratahs, these are my favourite garden flowers (or wildflowers for that matter).

I can't sing the praises of the Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro enough - a superb lens with great clarity and nice pulling power, with which this was taken.

Processed in Nikon Capture NX2 and finished in Photoshop CS3.
