Project: NOTE THAT THESE PHOTOFRAPHS COVER TWO INTERELATED IDRC PROJECTS:

1. Sri Lanka Virtual Villages: a Study of the Last Mile

Project Number 102291Start Date 2004/08/02

Following the creation of the virtual villages, two research studies will be carried out by two independent research teams. One will focus on the adaptability and appropriateness of ICT in the villages. The other will assess the impact of ICT-based services on the lives of the village inhabitants. The sustainability and replicability of the project will be closely monitored.

2. Strengthening Resilience in Tsunami-affected Communities (India and Sri Lanka)

Project Number 103594Start Date 2006/03/28

During the December 2004 tsunami in South Asia, it was reported that mangrove wetlands and other thick coastal vegetation served to reduce loss of life and property by providing a natural shield or barrier. In other cases, for example Nallavadu village in Pondicherry, loss of life was avoided when villagers received early warning via telephone or public address system linked to international sources of information.

This project aims to strengthen local capacities, livelihoods and protective forest belts. It will also increase people's access to strategic and transformative information through a network of village knowledge centres (VKCs). The results of the project are expected to demonstrate how new technologies and local institutions can reduce the vulnerability of the poor to natural disasters.
