Die Hörner sind beim Männchen locker geschraubt (zweieinhalb Windungen um die Längsachse). Das Fell ist kurz und glatt, die Fellfarbe braungrau. Jungtiere sind mehr rötlich grau bis hellbraun. Das Kudu bevorzugt steiniges, locker mit Buschwald bedecktes Hügel- und Bergland, doch auch Flachland mit gleichem Bewuchs, dort vor allem Akazienbäume (z.B. Kameldornbäume).
Die erste Hornwindung sieht man bei Männchen im Alter von zwei Jahren, die volle Ausbildung bis zweieinhalb Windungen nach etwas mehr als sechs Jahren. In Freiheit wird das Kudu etwa sieben bis acht Jahre alt.

The males have loosely screwed horns (two and a half turns around the longitudinal axis). The coat is short and smooth, the color of the coat is brown-grey. Juveniles are more reddish gray to light brown. The kudu prefers rocky hills and mountains loosely covered with bush forest, but also flat land with the same vegetation, especially acacia trees (e.g. camel thorn trees).
The first horn whorl can be seen in males at the age of two years, the full development of up to two and a half whorls after a little over six years. In the wild, the kudu lives to be around seven to eight years old.
