MEXICO, Mayan site Palenque
Palenque is an archaeological site surrounded by lowland jungle in the Mexican state of Chiapas near the modern city of Palenque. In the archaeological zone of Palenque are the ruins of a former Mayan metropolis, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. The Lacandon people living near the excavation site are considered to be the direct descendants of the former inhabitants of the old Palenque. On March 30, 2015, the memorial was added to the International Register of Cultural Property under the Special Protection of the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict
