Der Mount Agung ist ein kegelförmiger Stratovulkan, der aus Andesit und andesitischem Basalt besteht. Entstanden ist er durch Subduktion der ozeanischen Kruste. Sein Zentral-Krater befindet sich westlich der höchsten Erhebung, er misst 500 Meter im Durchmesser und ist 200 Meter tief. Die bisherigen Eruptionen verliefen häufig explosiv. Im 19. Jahrhundert brach der Vulkan dreimal aus. Über die Eruptionen davor ist wenig bekannt. Der Ausbruch von 1843 hatte nach neueren Schätzungen den Vulkanexplosivitätsindex VEI=5 (frühere Schätzung VEI=2). Im Schnitt haben die Ausbrüche des Vulkans VEI=2 bis VEI=3. 25 % der Ausbrüche können aber ähnlich oder sogar größer sein als die Eruption von 1963 mit VEI=5.

is a volcano in Bali, Indonesia, southeast of Mt Batur volcano, also in Bali. Gunung Agung stratovolcano is the highest point on Bali. It dominates the surrounding area, influencing the climate, especially rainfall patterns. From a distance, the mountain appears to be perfectly conical. From the peak of the mountain, it is possible to see the peak of Mt Rinjani on the nearby island of Lombok, to the east, although both mountains are frequently covered in clouds.
Gunung Agung is an active volcano, with a large and deep crater that occasionally emits smoke and ash.
Having begun in 2017, this volcano's latest eruption is ongoing as of 2018
