Measured & Fragmented Series

by Enrique Castrejon, Los Angeles, CA

These measured and fragmented collaged drawings come from a variety of eclectic media sources such as newspaper, magazine, online advertisements and photographs, art books, Sotheby’s auction catalogs, porn, and personal photos. Selected images are cut into smaller geometrical shapes, reconfigured, and separated with spaces in-between, exposing the shapes that make up the whole.

The distances around the shapes are measured in inches and their corresponding degree angles are calculated with a protractor and calculator. The final results are written around the shapes creating an intricate web of verifiable units. This repetitive and meditative process allows me to map out the drawing and reveal the invisible mathematical language found in everything.

The written measurements although objective, precise and rational, abstract the image, altering its fixed meaning, creating other possible meanings and meta-narratives. As a result this work attempts to subversively interfere in the information exchange between the media and consumer, creating a gap or distance between symbols, their meaning, and value.

Using measurements as a stand-in for language of representation, I am also investigating how it affects or interferes in visual perception, comprehension, and aesthetics.
