Malden Mural Design

This mural design was initiated at a Community Input Event in October 2009 when community members brainstormed themes that included Malden's history, diversity, youth, and nature. A task force of local youth was then created to work for a month to further research and develop the design that you see before you here. The location of the mural will be at the MBTA overpass at Malden Center on the corner of Pleasant and Summer Street. The left-most panel in the design will be on Summer Street and the rest will wrap around on the wall of the overpass on Pleasant Street.

The main concept of the mural design in that of a group of youth looking at a book of Malden's past and present. A hand opens the book that depicts Malden's history on the left including the old Converse factory, old high school building, etc. On the right, we have the new Malden high building with graduates looking forward to the future and "stepping out of the book" The mascots of the three high schools are represented with the lancer, eagle, and lion/tornado (on the skateboard). The shape of the water is that of the actual Malden river. The geese flying in the sky form an "M" for Malden. Also, the orange bookmark represents the orange line itself and Malden's slogan of "strong past, proud future" is included as well.

We are currently looking for your feedback on this design. If you have any suggestions of historical or present day buildings to add, any nature/animal imagery that is local to Malden, etc, please post a comment and let us know! We will be compiling comments in the spring and editing the design accordingly before painting in the Summer of 2010. Thanks for your participation!
