Rio Grande on Point
In 1988, the Rio Grande's parent corporation, Rio Grande Industries, purchased Southern Pacific Transportation Company, and as the result of a merger, the larger Southern Pacific Railroad name was chosen for identity. Then in 1996, the combined D&RGW/SP system with the parent company Southern Pacific Rail Corporation was sold to the Union Pacific Corporation.
In 1997, when this photograph was taken it was common to see various UP/SP lash up's over the Tehachapi Mountains but quite rare to see any Denver & Rio Grande locos.
