Dove Holes Tunnel Sign

There is little doubt that the greatest engineering triumph of the line between Manchester and Derby is Dove Holes Tunnel. Situated almost 1,000 feet above sea level it penetrates the 1,250 feet range of the Pennine Hills known as Cow Low. The Midland Railway commenced work on the tunnel in 1860 and it became operational in 1863 at a cost of £136,000.
