The Royal Train Carrying Her Majesty Queen Elizebeth ll to Wakefield
On March 27th 1992 Her Majesty the Queen visited Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Wakefield to attend the schools 400th anniversary celebrations. A good friend of mine, John Wraithwell, a signalmen based at Healey Mills, told me that the Royal Train would be parked at the old colliery sidings at Crigglestone before running into Wakefield Kirkgate.
Next to me on the road bridge was Walt Cavell, the Healey Mills driver who had actually brought the train into Crigglestone from Sheffield at 3.20 am that morning. For his services Walt had received a letter of thanks signed by HRH and a "Tenner" for a drink. Surprisingly Walt had been chosen for the duty purely on the basis of him being the man "next in line", dispelling the common belief that Royal Trains had specially selected crews.
This shot shows the train leaving Crigglestone at exactly 9.30am with 47805 "Windsor Castle" up front and 47825 at the rear.
