47318 At Hunslet East During Derailment

47318 had arrived the previous day from the Phillips (Former American Oil Company) Refinery at Port Clarence (Middlesbrough) with 10 x 100 ton tanks of diesel. Whilst reversing into the oil rail terminal the end tank, Caib 82737 ran over a blocked point and became derailed. The Regional Manager in charge of the rescue operation, Peter Smith very kindly allowed me to take some images of the scene and this particular one shows the loco with the remaining 9 tanks drawn up to the buffers that mark the end of BR's Hunslet East sidings.

These tracks were originally laid by the Great Northern in 1899 and connected Beeston Junction with Neville Hill, providing the railway company with a route through Leeds avoiding the City Centre. Just behind the photographer is the Aire & Calder Navigation Canal where the railway originally had a swing bridge. This freight only line closed to traffic in 1967 and the bridge was removed a few years later.
