56073 “Tremorfa Steel Works” at Grangetown, Middlesbrough
56073 “TSW” is captured at Grangetown’s steel works awaiting approval to enter the works. The 56’s affectionately referred to “Gridirons” by train enthusiasts were introduced into service between 1976 and 1984. A total 135 examples were manufactured with the initial 30 models being built by Electroputere in Romania. Unfortunately these suffered from numerous faults which resulted in BR having the remainder of the order built in Doncaster. For whatever reason, and I could never put my finger on it, the 56’s were my least favourite of BR Deisels in operation during the period of my photography excursions.
