Norfolk Southern and Conrail Combo Take a Merchandise Train Across Lake Pontacharon, LA
Photographed from Eden Isle on the Northern shore a pair of NS units start their journey across Lake Pontacharon with a merchandise train. Owned by Norfolk Southern the bridge spans 5.8 miles of open water, but its length also covers a further 15 miles of marshland. The southern approach required 12 miles of bridge and an additional 3 miles on the north end which actually makes it the longest railroad bridge in the world. In 2005 Hurricane Katrina destroyed 5 miles of the bridge’s 5.8 mile length and amazingly NS had the bridge fully operational again in under 3 weeks.
