EWS 66017 with Gypsums Dent Station

January 10 2004 was the date this photograph of 66017 passing through Dent with a southbound gypsum train.

There were numerous debates concerning the location of the station. In an early meeting one of the Dent residents asked the Midland representative if it might be possible to have the station nearer to the village. He replied that they had indeed considered that possibility, but upon reflection they had concluded that the station would be better sited next to the railway! The station is four miles from the village and access involves a steep 600 feet climb from the valley road. The station opened on August 6 1887 and closed on May 4 1970, before being reopened on July 14 1996. The Midland had never intended the Settle and Carlisle to be a "Local Railway", rather an express route to and from Scotland. The population along the route made it impossible for this to be viable as a commuter line.

The Station building was designed by the John Holloway Sanders FRIBA who was the Chief Architect of the London Midland Scottish Railway at the time the line was constructed. All the station Buildings along the line were built in the same style which was known as Midland Gothic or Derby Gothic.

On the hillside can be seen what remains of the 3 lines of railway sleepers that were installed by the Midland as a snow barrier.
