EWS 66219 Passes Culgaith Station and Signal Box

A visit to Culgaith on October 16 2004 resulted in this shot of EWS 66219 with a southbound loaded coal working, probably destined for Drax Power Station.

Situated 283 miles and 23 chains from London Saint Pancras, the station here opened to passengers on April 1 1880 and closed some 90 years later on May 4 1970. Culgaith Tunnel, the southern portal of which can be seen in the photograph was completed in 1873 and is 661 yards long. The signal box here was commissioned in January 1880 was still in active use at the time of my visit.
