Norfolk Southern in Mark Twain’s Hometown of Hannibal, Missouri
Hannibal is the birthplace of Samuel Langthorne Clemens, who is perhaps better known by his pen name, Mark Twain.
It's 8.45 in the morning and NS SD40-2 #3317 and GP50 #7089 are in charge of a short oil train. I later learned that was to be the only train scheduled over the bridge today.
The bridge was built by the Wabash Railroad in 1871. Originally a swing bridge it was converted to a lift bridge in 1994. Now part of the Norfolk Southern infrastructure, the bridge carries a single track over the Mississippi River between Hannibal Missouri and Pike County, Illinois. The track in the foreground belongs to BNSF.
