BNSF Westbound Intermodal Crossing the Mississippi at Fort Madison, Iowa.

BNSF #5426 leads a Westbound Intermodal across the Mississippi River into Fort Madison, Iowa. This is the railroad's main river crossing of the Southern Transcon, their major route between Chicago and Southern California and these rails regularly carry over 100 freight trains a day.

The Bridge was built by the American Bridge Company of New York in 1927 and replaces an earlier structure built by the AT&SF Railroad. Connecting Fort Madison, Iowa with Niota, Illinois the bridge is about a mile long with a swing span of 525 feet and carries double rails on the lower deck and two lanes of road traffic on the upper level.
