Union Pacific Westbound Merchandise, Cochise, Arizona
Union Pacific #5641, a General Electric B40-8 leads #2384, #4436 and #3443 through the ghost town of Cochise with a Westbound Merchandise working. 5641 was built in 1987 and was originally a Southern Pacific locomotive numbered 8032.
The town of Cochise was created as a fuel stop for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1880. To the right of the train is the Cochise County Store which was built in 1913 and now abandoned. Signs on the door read, "85 miles east of Tucson and 65 miles from Old Mexico" and "Never mind the dog, beware of the owner". Cochise's Stronghold is about 4 miles from this location and clearly signed. So how come the US Cavalry had such a hard time finding him!
