SMASHfestUK 'WILDFIRE!' 2022/23 Co-Design, development and Co-Production

by WynGriff

Documenting the co-design development and co-production for our Royal Academy of Engineering ‘INGENIOUS’ and British Science Association ‘Making Connections’ funded Climate Crisis ‘WILDFIRE!’ Programme.

Two distinct, but overlapping co-designed & co-produced Climate Crisis themed events:

The End of the World Immersive Adventure - Funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering ‘INGENIOUS’ Award
A situated immersive experience with immersive theatre, escape room and simulation environment elements, themed around the Climate Crisis (extreme drought – FIRE!) and STEM knowledge and skills. The experience will explore aspects of accessibility, meaningful connection with the local communities and removal of visible and invisible barriers to participation through a co-design and co-production programme with young people and participating specialists (climate scientists, engineers, public engagement professionals, designers, filmakers/virtual production professionals) across Lewisham (and other areas of London). Researchers will be studying transformation of particpantsʼ personal ʻSTEM Identityʼ through ʻnarrative transportation mechanisms.

SMASH Climate Crisis - Escape Room
- unded by the UKRI/UKSFN: ‘Making Connections fund - A co-design and co-production programme exploring the climate crisis, drought and fire with 3 South East London youth and youth theatre groups to create an ʻescape room performanceʼ. The groups will work with SMASH and researchers
to develop storylines, characters and technical challenges to be performed by the group as a theatre piece, and to explore transformation of personal ʻSTEM Identityʼ through the process.
