Kneeling Woman by Ralph Stackpole

In 1943 President Franklin Roosevelt banished this sculpture.

sending it to a distant spot on his Hyde Park, New York estate.

 

FDR's New Deal enabled many artists to pursue exciting new artistic avenues. Yet, when buying art for himself the President operated within more conservative stylistic boundaries.
