In the early 1880s Dr. Franklin L. Miles of Elkhart, Indiana began bottling and selling medicine which he prescribed for a variety of illnesses including nervous exhaustion, headaches, insomnia, backaches, epilepsy, and miscellaneous pains and spasms. In 1884 Miles founded the Dr. Miles Medical Company.
The company printed a huge amount of advertising material combining useful information with product promotion. In 1978 Bayer AG based in Leverkusen, Germany, acquired the Miles company.
