Bison at the Edge

The Plains Indians depended on the American bison or buffalo to sustain their way of life. US policy in the 1800's was to kill all the buffalo as a way to destroy these Indians.

Last winter, the state of Montana authorized the slaughter of more than 1600 of these magnificent animals as a way to protect nearby cattle from possible disease. There is no evidence that bison transmit disease to cattle.
