Vietnam Driving - Chicken Style
Sitting on the bus returning from Halong Bay to Hanoi I thought the style of driving was a mix of madness & thrilling.
But once you get used to their driving it is safer than most '1st World' countries. The difference being that in Vietnam drivers compromise and consider everyone else. If a driver flashes traffic coming towards him it is a clear indicative he is coming through and the 'opposing' traffic moves over to allow safe passing - they don't hug the white line to play chicken with the other driver. Over our time in Vietnam & Cambodia I came to respect their give way attitude that kept traffic continuously moving and definitely more efficient & safer than western driving.
