Mary, Weeding
Mary had gone ahead of me as I photographed at the "post office pond." When I arrived home I spotted her from about a block away, making short work of our dog fennel. Even though temperature is in the 90s and heat index in the triple digits Fahrenheit, she is protecting her skin by wearing long sleeves and pants, wrap-around sunglasses, and a broad-brimmed straw hat on top of a baseball cap. The sun was still strong when I took this shot after 6 PM.
She tackles the dog fennel before I weed-whack the yard, which I'll be doing soon. Even though weed-whacking is more labor-intensive, it creates less wear and tear on the yard than mowing does. Our yard drops off at an approximate 11 percent grade to the right of frame, adding to the soil's fragility.
