Eject USB drive in Windows 7

If you try to eject an USB drive in Windows most likely you won't be able to. A message is displayed: "This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again."

What to do? You can download Process Explorer to find out what program is responsible. You can see that process System (Windows 7) is doing something. If you try to close the handle this causes an error.

Conclusion: it is not possible to eject USB drives in a safe way using Windows 7 other than to shutdown the computer. I recommend you just pull the drive and not try to do this using Windows 7.
