Khiva, Uzbekistan, the Old City walls.

Khiva was one of the wealthiest cities on the silk route. The huge buttress, given scale by the local dog, was built of mud and clay. It was as much an expression of power as a defence. This little gem is well worth a visit, the old city is pretty much intact. Rumour has it that the heroes of old were buried in the walls to add more strength. The famous Amu Darya, The Oxus river that was legendary even in the time of Alexander the Great is about 20km away. It used to be closer, giving Khiva prominence in this region.
