Captain Arthur Roxburghe Orr, Scots Guards.

Killed in Action 17 Oct 1915, aged 30.

Son of Jane Orr of Kinnaird House, Larbert, Stirlingshire, and the late Robert Orr.

Remembered here but buried at Sailly-Labourse Communal Cemetery, France.

 

Sub-Lieutenant John Stuart Kirkland, Royal Navy, HMS Turbulent.

Killed in Action 31 May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland, aged 20.

Son of James Knox Kirkland JP and Catherine Knox Kirkland, of Craiglilico, Cooe, Dunbartonshire. Native of Glasgow.

Remembered here and on Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

 

After the First World War, an appropriate way had to be found of commemorating those members of the Royal Navy who had no known grave, the majority of deaths having occurred at sea where no permanent memorial could be provided. The Portsmouth Naval Memorial was unveiled by the Duke of York (the future King George VI) on 15 October 1924.
