The Manchester engineer Richard Roberts was a partner in the Sharp Roberts company that built this machine in 1835. Roberts is believed to have invented the slotting machine. This slotter is made of cast iron. The table can be moved backwards, forwards and sideways. It can also be tilted so tapered slots can be cut.
Slotting machines are used in all types of industry for cutting slots and keyways, in parts that are not achievable on other machines.
