This is an important mid-career work by the Irish genre painter Mulready. The painting was lost to art scholars for decades. It was rediscovered in a flat clearance by Christie's auctioneers in 2016. The painting was bought from the artist by Lady Swinburne in two installments in 1826 for 350 pounds, according to Mulready's account book.
Mulready studied at London's Royal Academy. His paintings of contemporary life, including romantic rural scenes, were popular. He was praised by his contemporaries for his meticulous technique.
