[109552] Market Harborough : Old Grammar School

Old Grammar School, Church Square, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, 1614.

A restored timber framed building with an open ground floor formerly used for market functions and with the former schoolroom above.

Grade l listed.

 

The timber portion of this building was erected in 1614 by Robert Smyth. It was set up on posts 'to keepe the markett people drye in tyme of foule wether.' The brick portion was added in 1868 and the building was restored by public subscription in 1978.

 

The building is owned by The Market Harborough & The Bowdens Charity. In 2014 the charity undertook a comprehensive programme of refurbishment which involved works on all parts of the structure and the replacement of the majority of external elements.
