To the Glory of God and in loving memory of William Miles and Mary Anne his wife, also of their daughter-in-law Harriet Wagstaff Miles who fell asleep 2nd March 1882, 27th May 1894 and 17th May 1913.
Nuttgens was born in Aachen, Germany. His mother was British and he lived in Britain from the age of four, which did not stop him from being interned during World War I. He was a draughtsman for AA Orr and became chief assistant of Martin Travers, who was a powerful influence as, at an earlier stage, was Christopher Whall. Nuttgens also produced designs for Powell & Son and spent the later part of his life near High Wycombe, where he became a friend of Eric Gill. He had twelve children of whom one, also Joseph, was an artist who took over from his father and is still a glassmaker.
