[94864] Barmouth : The Last Haul
The Quay, Barmouth, Gwynedd.
The Last Haul.
Detail.
The subject is three fishermen hauling a net in.
In 1709 a 700 ton Genoese galleon was wrecked in a storm five miles north-west of this point. Its precious cargo of 43 huge blocks of Carrara marble was en route from Italy to an unknown destination. This two-ton piece was raised from the wreck by its finders and donated to Barmouth. The community chose the design, and local sculptor Frank Cocksey was commissioned by the Town Council to create this unique work of art as a celebration of the new millennium.
