[86885] St James, Warter : 4th Baron Muncaster Window

St James, Warter, East Yorkshire, 1862-63.

Window by Charles Alexander Gibbs (1825-1877).

Detail.

To the memory of his brother, Gamel Augustus, 4th Baron Muncaster, Alan Joseph Pennington dedicates this AD 1863.

Charles Henry Wilson (1833-1907), later 1st Baron Nunburnholme, bought the Warter Priory estate in 1878 from Josslyn Francis Pennington, 5th Baron Muncaster (1834-1917).

Charles Alexander Gibbs was one of three sons of Isaac Alexander Gibbs (1802-1851) who became stained-glass designers. The family firm was established in about 1848, but split when Charles Gibbs set up his own works at 148 Marylebone Road, London in 1858.

The church became redundant in 1990 and is now maintained by the Yorkshire Wolds Heritage Centre.
