John Sadler (1720-1789) started business as a printer in Liverpool from about 1748. At the time Liverpool had a thriving pottery industry and the wares included painted tin-glazed fireplace tiles. In 1749 Sadler began a series of experiments to decorate tiles through transfer-printing the design, which would be quicker and cheaper and undercut the Dutch manufacturers supplying the English market. Sadler knew Guy Green (died 1799), who worked in the printing business of John Sadler's father, Adam Sadler. By 1756 Sadler and Green were working together to perfect the process of transfer-printing on tiles.
