[81056] Fairfield Moravian Settlement : Penfold VR Post Box

Fairfield Moravian Settlement, Droylsden, Greater Manchester.

Fairfield Road.

Replica Queen Victoria Hexagonal Penfold Pillar Box.

The Post Office had struggled with a standard design for pillar boxes which could be adopted across the country. In June 1864 they asked John Wornham Penfold to design a new pillar box for them. Penfold was an experienced architect and surveyor. He was elected the first Honorary Secretary of the Institute of Surveyors (now the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) and also served as President of the Architectural Association.

Fairfield Moravian Settlement is the largest of its kind to be established in England. The doctrinal emphasis on Christian brotherhood and community living led to the establishment of the self-contained village by Benjamin La Trobe. It was planned around a square, with the church facing south over an avenue of trees, graveyards and gardens.
