To the honoured memory of Captain John Woodburn, 44th Bengal Native Infantry, and Commandant of the 5th Disciplined Hindostanee Regiment of Infantry, in the service of His Majesty the late Shah Soojah-Ool-Moolk, who nobly fell at the head of a small band of devoted followers in action with an overpowering number of Ghilzie insurgents, near Ghuznee, in Affghanistan, on the 4th of November 1841. This cenotaph has been erected by the surviving British officers of that service, friends and companions in arms, who deeply lamented his untimely fate, knew and admired his great skill as a soldier, his sterling worth and honesty as a man.
