In the Year of Our Lord 1792. This house was built In Memory of DW SUTTON of North Meols, who was the first Founder & Executor of South Port, which was call'd his folly for many Years and it proved that his foresight was his Wisdom which should be remembered with Gratitude by the LORDS of this Manor and the Inhabitants of the PLACE ALSO.
This column was erected AD 1860 by The Improvement Commissioners as a tribute of respect to the late WILLIAM SUTTON Commonly known as the Old Duke The Founder of Southport. He was born at Churchtown, North Meols, AD 1752 and died there May 22nd, 1840. He erected almost upon this spot AD 1792, the First House in what is now the flourishing town of Southport, then a wilderness of Sandhills. The First House originally called 'The Duke's Folly' was afterwards known as the Original Hotel. A Memorial Tablet taken from its walls has been placed on the NE side of this Column and this street has received the name of Duke Street in remembrance of the Old Duke.
The original monument, comprised of a simple, square monument with carved plaques on the south-west and north-east faces, was erected in 1845. In 1860, an iron lamp was erected above the monument. It was dismantled and moved to the present location in 1912 when the road system was altered. The plaques, currently set in the wall of Lord Street, were originally part of a larger monument sited 24 yards west, a spot now covered by Lord Street itself. No further information on the erection of this monument has been found.
William Sutton is regarded as the founder of Southport. He was born in Churchtown in 1752, dying there on 22nd May 1840. The memorial in its original form stood on the site of the first house erected in Southport in 1792 by Sutton. It was called 'The Duke's Folly', later renamed the 'Original Hotel'.
