[43921] St Peter, Leeds : Hardwicke Tomb
Parish Church of St Peter, Leeds.
Leeds Minster.
Tomb (detail) of Thomas Hardwicke (d1577), his wife Anne and their seven children. A rare example of an Elizabethan Table Tomb, which stood behind the altar of the previous church.
He is depicted with his two sons and two of Anne's sons by a previous marriage behind him, and facing Anne with her three daughters kneeling behind her. The boys' names are written above them. In the centre is a desk with two books above a death's head. The figure of a dancing skeleton holding a wand and spade represents Death.
