The church was erected in memory of the Rev Thomas Kenrick Hall, former vicar of Whatton, who drowned in February 1890 as RMS Quetta was wrecked off Queensland on her way to Thursday Island. His mother, Mrs Sophia E Hall, paid for the church.
RMS Quetta was a British-India Steam Navigation Company liner which struck an uncharted rock off the Queensland coast on 28 February 1890. Quetta's sinking killed 134 of the 292 people on board. This was one of Queensland's biggest maritime catastrophes.

Michael David Stokes established MDS Stained Glass in Nottinghamshire in 1985.
