Exploring Caran-d'Ache Grafwood 'Graphite Line' pencil
I have not done any sketching in ages and need more practice! :)
I have a number of graphite pencils (Faber-Castell, Staedtler, Derwent) and this is the latest aquisition = ASAS... "Art Supplies Aquisition Syndrome" as well as 'brand loyalty' :)
I 'grew up' with Caran d'Ache and so just had to try the GRAPHITE LINE www.carandache.com/ch/en/graphite-pencils/box-of-6-hardne... . Nice :)
This is a very nice pencil in a nice metal box with foam padding. It glides easily across my Stillman & Birn sketch book. I like the shaded barrels which make it easy to find the required grades. Also, the pencils are a bit thicker in diameter than all other pencils, apart from the formative children's pencils I still have.
The one disadvantage of the thicker barrels is that the pencils don't seem fit into any of the pencil sharpeners I have, with the small hole being too small, the larger hole being too large and not making the nice long tip the pencils originally came with. I am resorting to sharpening these pencils with a scalpel, which needs some practice, and the scalpel is viciously sharp!
A Caran d'Ache pencil sharpener machine is available, but it is EXPENSIVE and, unless I could sell my work eventually for a good price (highly unlikely) not really an option for me. www.theartgearguide.com/home/caran-dache-sharpener-review
Magnesium double hole sharpeners are available but, at this stage, I am not sure whether they are suitable for this kind of pencil.
Arrgh... that little jar on the right looks quite wrong ... :)
