Peacock's Dance - Handmade Necklace by Kaushambi Shah
"Peacock's Dance" is inspired by "Black Peacocks with Japanese Persimmons", an artwork by Jessie Arms Botke, 1940.
In this necklace design, I have tried to capture the intricacy and color palette of the peacock's plume as it dances to the beauty of its surrounding landscape.
Taking hints of gold from the artist’s technique of applying gold to the panel, I have wire-wrapped lapis lazuli and Picasso Czech glass beads on matte gold toned chain with gold toned wire, around a ceramic peacock focal.
While the lapis beads capture the colors of the plume, the Picasso Czech beads with dashes of antique gold merge with the gold tones of the wire-work and chain to enhance the necklace. The dangling teardrop from the peacock focal subtly picks up on the colors of persimmons in the landscape, and depicts the decorative crest atop the peacock’s head.
Technique – wire wrapping
Stringing length – 18 to 19 inches
Pendant dangle length – 2.5 inches
Materials – ceramic pendant focal; polymer clay teardrop headpin; matte gold toned chain; gold toned wire; lapis lazuli round beads; Picasso Czech oval beads; lobster clasp
Art Bead Credits:
Peacock focal – handmade by Nancy Schindler (round rabbit extra)
Teardrop headpin – handmade by Heather Powers (humblebeads)
