MOTHER GODDESS (Chamundi)
IMPORTANCE OF MOTHER GODDESS (HEROINE) WORSHIP IN THEYYAM ARTS OF MALABAR
Kolathunad, the traditional Northern Division of Malabar, is an independent cultural unit different in much respect from the rest of Kerala. The cult of Theyyam, a ritualistic folk dance, is a significant cultural aspect of the Region. Its origin can be traced to remote antiquity. As a living cult with centuries-old tradition, it has become part of the popular religion of HINDU Community in this area. These cults have been so much deep-rooted that the social changes and modernization of our day have not destroyed them.
The cult of mother Goddess has prevailed in India in remote antiquity. It may be supposed the pre-Aryan races defined the female principle which ultimately developed into a cult of Mother Goddess.
Olden time’s women’s were equally respected. In MANUSMRITHI, Raja Manu stated “Yetra Naryasthu Poojyentte Remanthe Tatra Devatha”. Where women’s are not respected, there the entire work is in-vain. The same principle is adopted in Theyyam arts too.
