Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox)
February 25th, 2024 12:00PM
High of 80 degrees Fahrenheit
Low of 45 degrees Fahrenheit
75 degrees Fahrenheit at capture
After several consecutive days of warm temps and sun, this day was windy with some clouds but mostly sunny. A few friends and I hiked up the side of a mountain to a rocky outcrop which was home to coachwhips and diamondbacks. While the beginning of the trip was discouraging with no finds at all, once we got to one end we found an atrox just exiting it's den, which got away from us. Shortly after on the way back, my friend spotted two large ones resting in the mouth of a crevice, one of which we captured for pictures. It was very defensive, but only struck once opting instead to rattle and stand its ground.
