Eastern Coachwhip (Masticophis flagellum flagellum)

April 3rd, 2021 2:00PM

High of 73 degrees Fahrenheit

70 degrees Fahrenheit at capture

After a brief cold spell, temperatures gradually warmed up until this day when it was sunny and the high was in the 70's. The day started out in discouraging fashion, as we were eluded by a coachwhip at our first stop. We decided to try a location 30 miles southwest in the adjacent county. As we attempted to lift a large rock there, my friend noticed this big (6 foot +) snake slowly attempting to crawl away in a nearby cedar thicket. After a brief chase we cornered it under a shallow ledge and were able to extract it for photos. Upon release it shot away with incredible speed and disappeared under a nearby ledge.
