Mos Espa Pod Race

Sorry flickr followers! I'm just getting around to posting my finished Mos Espa Pod Race diorama. Posted on Instagram a few months ago, just forgot about flickr as I'm not really on this platform much.

Anyways, this was probably the most nostalgic set/scene. The original official Mos Espa Lego set is what started me down my hobby of Lego custom MOCs. Used to build all kinds of podracers when I was kid. Being the 25th anniversary of Phantom Menace and 25 years of Lego Star Wars, I had to honor the occasion. Hope everyone enjoys it as much as I had designing and building it.

Started with Sebulba's pod and once I was finished, it felt incomplete. I needed to have Anakin's pod! They truly are pair. Once there, you have to have a display where they are racing! Pulled some inspiration from Inthert's Anakin diorama as I loved it when he posted that many years ago at this point. Loved the landscape he built and some parts of his pod was just perfect. Obviously had to redesign mostly everything to my specification. Same with JastaBricks. He nailed the front of the, "chariot", "sleds", whatever you call them, so perfectly. The implementation of the wind screen is perfect! You can see a mix of the sled having the back half of Inthert and the front being Jasta. Doing a hybrid of the two with some flair on my end really nails it in my opinion.

Had to revamp the engines however. Really making them mostly 3 stud diameter make it really feel closer to that minfig size. Which I would argue they are minfig size, even though they are a few studs longer. But it really helped with proportions.

Sebulba's was fully on my end. I haven't seen really anyone really nail his pod at this scale, but for good reason. It's hard at this scale especially with how much is going on and some limited pieces in orange. However, I think I did it justice at minfig scale.

I really wanted to make the pods seem more dynamic. That means I couldn't just have them flat, they needed to have uneven engines to feel like it was actively moving. This really helped when I made the "sleds" also have some tilt. This along with the rubber hoses really sold it for me.

Anyways, hope you all like. Peace and love!
