Devi Durga

Durga Puja - Indians celebrate Durga puja as a celebration of victory of Good (Durga) over Evil (the Demon Mahishasura -seen at the feet of the deity).

According to Hindu mythology, the Demon Mahishasura defeated and drove away all the gods (Devtas) from Swarga, the kingdom of the Devta king Indra.

Mahishasura had got a power from Brahma so that he could not be killed by any Man in Heaven or Earth. So the Gods created the female Goddess Durga, a combined power of all the Forces of Devtas, and she slayed the Demon Mahishasura. hence the goddes represents Power (Shakti).

The goddess has Ten hands, each representing a Power. The Lion is her Vahana (vehicle). She is shown in traditional Durga puja along with her daughters Lakshmi (godess of Wealth) and Saraswati (godess of Knowledge) and her sons, Ganesh and Kartik

Mahish-asura (the Buffalo demon is called so as he takes the form of a Buffalo, to hide himself)
