Eagle Island, Co Mayo, Ireland.
The wonderfully named Eagle Island lies off the Mullet Peninsula in Erris in north west County Mayo has been home to a remote lighthouse since 1835, which is now unmanned since 1988,
The Island is located close to the edge of the Continental Shelf and is constantly pounded by powerful Atlantic waves & storms. When the lighthouses were first built in the 19th century there were two lighthouses and seven dwelling houses on Eagle Island, By 1911 census there was only one dwelling house on the island. Despite the lighthouse standing over 200ft above the high tide mark and the erection of a massive storm walls to protect them, one of the lighthouses was destroyed by the severe storms and its remains still litter the ground it used to stand on today.
